In a recent survey of our participants we asked them why they had been in one of our groups.  From the results it's clear that our groups address a very fundamental need.  We provide a place for you to meet with others who really understand what you have been going through.

Unfortunately many of us are surrounded with friends and loved ones who "just don’t get it."  Often it's because they haven't personally experienced depression.  They just can't imagine being so de-energized or glum.  Sometimes our friends and family don't have patience for us or wish a quick fix for our problem.  Frequently they don't know what to do even if they do wish to be helpful.

Reach Out of the Darkness: The Role of Support Groups

One of our participants in a group meeting told us about the heavy emotional burden she was bearing. She felt stuck, and was extremely pessimistic. She said she had little reason to live. After exploring in the group what might have been driving this painful and scary state of mind, the questions and suggestions moved to where could she turn for companionship and support? She said she didn’t have much in the way of support, that her friends were unreliable just when she needed them most.

In our support groups we often hear about how another person or persons are creating pain in the participant’s life. The other person is critical or uncaring. They attack or respond in ways that hurt us or make us feel unsupported.
