Effective Recovery Support

In a recent survey of our participants we asked them why they had been in one of our groups. From the results it's clear that our groups address a very fundamental need. We provide a place for you to meet with others who really understand what you have been going through. Unfortunately many of us are surrounded with friends and loved ones who "just don’t get it." Often it's because they haven't personally experienced depression. They just can't imagine being so de-energized or glum. Sometimes our friends and family don't have patience for us or wish a quick fix for our problem. Frequently they don't know what to do even if they do wish to be helpful. While being in one our groups can provide the encouragement you might need, it’s so important to work with family and friends to line up help for other times. Here's what you can do:

  • Talk with a few trusted individuals about your mood disorder. Provide some information to them about your symptoms and treatment. Ask if they can commit to help you when you are experiencing difficulties.
  • Tell them about your triggers and the impact that depression has on you. Make sure you explain what can be done to help you when you being triggered or are stuck.
  • If possible, your support plan should be part of a broader plan for taking care of you. One particularly good approach to creating a good game plan is WRAP – Wellness Action Recovery Plan. The Depression Workbook by Mary Ellen Copeland has a lot of great information about how to make a lasting recovery plan.
