Audio Connection: Using Your Computer's Microphone/Headset (Voice Over Internet Protocol / VOIP)   Support Groups  /   Technical Support

When you use your computer to participate in the audio portion of the meeting, you are using VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). To use VOIP, your computer must have a supported sound card and be connected to the Internet. For best results, use a computer headset with a high-quality microphone rather than speakers and a microphone.

System Requirements for VOIP

After you log into a meeting, you will be given the option to either use your phone to dial into the meeting or to use your computer's microphone (voice over the internet / VOIP) for audio. The instructions below guide you through a VOIP connection.

1. Once you join a meeting, the Audio Conference window is displayed.

2. At the bottom of the Audio Conference window, click the triangle shape to the left of Use Computer Headset.. Click on Call Using Computer.

3. If this is your first time connecting to audio across the Internet, the Audio Setup Wizard appears to help you fine-tune your audio settings. Follow the directions to specify your settings.

4. Once you are connected, the Volume Control window is displayed. Here you can control the volume levels for both your speaker and microphone.

5. Your connection status will be displayed in the bottom right section of the meeting screen.

The Participants panel (on the right side of the meeting screen, as displayed below) will show all the people who have already joined the meeting. Participants are listed by the name that they have chosen to be identified by for this meeting. You should see your name under Attendees with the diamond shape to the left of it.

You will also see a headset icon to the left of your name. This also shows that you successfully connected to the audio portion of the meeting through a computer connection (VOIP).

Please note: The audio of all participants will be muted until the meeting begins. A red x on the headset icon identifies audio that has been muted.

Please read Before the Meeting Starts before your first meeting so you understand what takes place in the 30 minutes or so before your meeting starts.
